The highest peaks
Most of us have a desire to strive upwards, to reach the top and the big perspectives. Gränslandet is not known for its high peaks, but there are still tremendous views and challenging climbs. The highest peaks are in Femundsmarka on the Norwegian side.
Storvätteshågna is not the highest mountain in Gränslandet, but it’s the highest peak in Dalarna and Svealand.
In the 17th century, the Swedish natural scientist and historian Olof Rudbeck proclaimed Städjan the highest mountain in the world. He may have got the elevation wrong, but altitude is not all. He also declared the mountain to be a dwelling place for gods. The 1 131 metre high mountain is considered sacred in Sami religion, which is easy to understand when you look at the steep summit that stands out like a volcano among the surrounding lower mountains. In this respect it’s up to each one of us to decide whether he was right!
