The dramatic bare mountain

Everything becomes more dramatic on the bare mountain tops. Without protecting trees, storms rage and snow drifts into patches that can remain far into the summer. Only low-growing shrubs and brushwood cope with the hard winds and poor soil on the bare mountain. At the very top, only lichens and the odd fern survive in the stony desert.

In the northern part of Gränslandet, large parts of the bare mountain region are stony, even in the low mountain areas. Further south, on Städjan, Nipfjället and around Grövelsjön there are more inviting and easy-to-walk bare mountains with softly swaying undergrowth.
